Wednesdays Are Best

Wednesdays are the best.

It’s the day I spend with Johnny and Eliza aka Lizey-Lou

I go to their house and play the whole day. We play trucks and a game we made-up called Mr. McGregor and the naughty Peter Rabbit, which consists of me being the cantankerous Mr. McGregor and Johnny being the naughty Peter Rabbit. I hold Lizey-Lou in my arms as we go after that pesky rabbit so we can make him into stew. We also play Candyland and checkers and we build an indoor slide with the tumbling mat I gave them for Christmas three years ago.

At lunchtime we bring Bear, a four-foot stuffed Teddy Bear and the eight inch high stuffed penguin, aptly named Penguin, to the table to join us. We have a saying at the table, which is usually repeated by me mostly.

“When we eat we eat… when we play we play.” Very philosophical. I like to do one thing at a time unlike Johnny who likes to play and eat simultaneously and Lizey-Lou who likes to play with her food while she eats.

We have a whole afternoon of hide and seek, or we go outside and swing or I become the engine to their cars and trucks in which they ride. This can get very wild. I tend not to walk when pushing my grandkids on their bikes or in their play cars, I tend to run as fast as I can and we fly down the long driveway like the wind. It’s especially good after it rains, because then we have puddles to run through.

When we get tired, we come inside and do some art. Usually that’s painting on paper or painting on each other. Then we have piggyback rides and stories and I kiss them both and get in my car while they stand at the window and wave like little flags as I pull out of the driveway.

I do not make dinner on Wednesday nights because I don’t feel like it. I don’t do any of my chores either. Sometimes I take a short nap when I get home, I don’t know why, but sometimes I do.
